Dental Fillings in Sungai Buloh
Dental Fillings
A dental filling restores a tooth that has been damaged by decay, fracture, or wear — returning it to its original shape and function before the damage progresses further.
For our patients experiencing sensitivity from caries and decay, our dentists at Klinik Pergigian Polidental can place fillings, using materials that are durable, well-matched to your tooth, and appropriate for the location and extent of the damage.

Price varies depending on the size of the cavity, the material selected, and the tooth being treated

Types of Fillings
The material used for your filling will depend on the location of the tooth, the size of the cavity, aesthetic considerations, and your budget. We will discuss the most appropriate option with you before treatment begins.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are made from a tooth-coloured resin bonded directly to the tooth surface, meaning less healthy tooth material needs to be removed during preparation. Composite is commonly chosen for visible areas of the mouth, suitable for both front and back teeth.
Amalgam Fillings
Amalgam is a silver-coloured metal alloy that is extremely durable, highly resistant to wear, and well-suited to back teeth that endure heavy chewing forces. Amalgam fillings are generally more affordable than composite and have a long clinical track record.
Ceramic Fillings
For larger cavities that don’t need a crown, ceramic fillings (inlays or onlays) are a good choice. They cover a much larger area of the biting surface with a high-strength ceramic material, custom-made to fit the prepared tooth precisely, and are great for back teeth.
Glass Ionomer Fillings
Glass ionomer is a tooth-coloured material that releases fluoride into the surrounding tooth structure over time, providing some protection against further decay. It is gentler on the tooth surface during preparation, not as strong or wear-resistant.
| Composite | Amalgam | Glass Ionomer | Ceramic | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Tooth-coloured | Silver, visible | Tooth-coloured | Tooth-coloured |
| Strength | Good | Very high | Moderate | Very high |
| Durability | 5–10 years | 15+ years | 3–7 years | 10–15+ years |
| Fluoride release | No | No | Yes | No |
| Tooth preparation | Conservative | More removal required | Conservative | Conservative |
| Best for | Front and back teeth, visible areas | Back teeth, large cavities | Low-stress areas, high decay risk | Large cavities on back teeth, replacement of large failing fillings |

Temporary Fillings
A temporary filling is a short-term restoration to protect a tooth while a more permanent solution is being prepared. Unlike a permanent filling, the material is intentionally softer and easier for the dentist to remove at the next appointment.
We recommend temporary fillings for many different situations, like when a tooth needs a root canal treatment across multiple appointments, sealing the tooth between visits to prevent bacteria from re-entering the cavity. They are also placed if a deep cavity needs monitoring or if the patient hasn’t decided on a permanent restoration.
Replacing Old Fillings
The seal between a filling and the surrounding tooth can weaken, allowing bacteria to enter and new decay to develop underneath. Old fillings can also crack, chip, or wear down.
If you’re experiencing sensitivity in a previously restored tooth, see visible cracks or roughness on the filling surface, have food consistently catching around the area, or feel that your filling is loose, our dentist can help you examine your filling and replace it if needed. If the tooth structure has worsened, a crown may be recommended instead to protect and restore the tooth.
When Do You Need a Filling?
- A tooth has developed a cavity from decay that needs to be removed and restored
- A tooth is chipped, cracked, or has a small fracture that requires repair
- A tooth has worn down significantly from grinding or acid erosion
- An existing filling is cracked, leaking, or no longer sealing the tooth properly
- A tooth is sensitive to cold, heat, or sweet foods which can indicate early decay or a compromised restoration
In many cases, early decay produces no pain or obvious symptoms at all. Decay identified early through an examination or X-ray can be treated with a small, simple filling before it progresses to something more involved.
What to Expect During Your Dental Filling Appointment
The Dental Filling Process
A filling appointment is straightforward and typically completed in a single visit. If the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth, root canal treatment may be recommended instead.
Our dentist will then check your bite and adjust it to ensure the filling sits comfortably and does not interfere with how your upper and lower teeth come together. They’ll also advise you on what to expect after the appointment and how to care for the restored tooth going forward.
Consultation
We start by examining the affected tooth and, where necessary, taking an X-ray to determine the extent of the decay and whether a filling is the appropriate treatment.
The treatment area is numbed completely before the procedure begins. You may feel pressure or movement, but not sharp pain.
The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is carefully removed using a dental drill or handpiece. The cavity is then cleaned and prepared to receive the filling material.
The chosen filling material is placed into the prepared cavity, shaped to match the natural contours of the tooth, and hardened where applicable.

FAQ on Dental Fillings
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the filling procedure be painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so the area will be fully numb before any treatment begins. You should not feel pain during the procedure, only some pressure and vibration.
After the anaesthetic wears off, it is normal to experience some mild sensitivity for a few days, particularly to temperature. This usually settles on its own. If sensitivity persists beyond a week or two, contact our clinic.
How long does a filling take?
Most filling appointments take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the size and location of the cavity and the material being used. Multiple fillings can sometimes be completed in the same appointment, which we can discuss during your consultation.
How long will my filling last?
This depends on the material used, the size of the filling, its location in the mouth, and how well you maintain your oral hygiene. Composite fillings typically last five to ten years, amalgam fillings fifteen years or more, and glass ionomer fillings between three and seven years. Regular dental check-ups allow us to monitor the condition of your fillings and address any issues before they become more serious.
My tooth doesn't hurt. Do I still need a filling?
Yes, in many cases. Decay in its early stages rarely causes pain so by the time a cavity is causing significant discomfort, it has often progressed considerably. An asymptomatic cavity identified on an X-ray or during a check-up is best treated immediately, while it is still small.
Can a large cavity always be filled?
Not always. If the decay is very extensive and has compromised a significant portion of the tooth structure, a filling may not be sufficient to restore the tooth adequately. In these cases, a crown may be recommended to provide full coverage and protection. If the decay has reached the nerve, root canal treatment will be needed before the tooth can be restored.
What is a secondary cavity?
A secondary cavity is decay that develops at the gaps of an existing filling, where the seal between the filling material and the tooth has weakened over time. This is one of the most common reasons fillings eventually need to be replaced.
Can children have fillings?
Yes. Decay in children’s teeth, including baby teeth, should be treated as soon as possible. Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth developing beneath them, and untreated decay can spread, cause pain, and lead to premature tooth loss that affects the alignment of the adult teeth. We are a child-friendly clinic and our team is experienced in making younger patients feel comfortable and at ease during treatment.
