Dental Crowns and Bridges in Sungai Buloh

Crowns and Bridges

A dental crown restores a tooth that is damaged, weakened, or heavily restored. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the teeth on either side of the gap. Together, these are two of the most common and reliable ways to protect your teeth and restore your smile.

At Klinik Pergigian Polidental, we design and fit crowns and bridges with careful attention to function, fit, and appearance so your restoration looks natural and lasts.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over an existing tooth, covering it entirely from the gum line upward. It restores the tooth’s original shape, size, and strength while protecting it from further damage.Once cemented in place, they function and feel like a natural tooth. With proper care, a well-made crown can last for many years.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is used to fill the gap of missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth are reshaped and fitted with crowns that hold the bridge securely in place. Like a crown, a bridge is a fixed restoration. Once fitted, it does not need to be removed for cleaning and restores both the appearance and chewing function of the missing tooth.

Types of Crowns

The best material for your crown depends on a combination of factors — there is no single option that suits every patient or every tooth. During your consultation, we will discuss these considerations with you and recommend the most appropriate material based on your specific situation.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia is a high-strength ceramic material that is both durable and natural. It is metal-free, highly resistant to chipping and fracture, and closely mimics the translucency of natural tooth enamel. Zirconia crowns are suitable for both front and back teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns

A PFM crown has a metal base for strength with a porcelain outer layer for appearance. This has been a long-standing option in dentistry, particularly for back teeth. Over time, a thin dark line may become visible at the gums which is worth considering for highly visible teeth.

Full Metal Crowns

Full metal crowns, typically made from gold or other dental alloys, are extremely strong and durable. They require less removal of tooth structure than other types and are particularly suitable for back molars where appearance is less of a concern.

All-Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns offer the most natural-looking result, free from metal. They are an excellent choice for front teeth where aesthetics are the priority. Modern all-ceramic materials have improved in strength, though may be less suitable for patients with heavy bites.

Types of Bridges

The type of bridge recommended will depend on the location of the gap and the condition of the surrounding teeth.

Traditional Bridge

The most common type of bridge, a traditional bridge uses the natural teeth on either side of the gap as anchors. This is a strong and reliable option when the adjacent teeth are healthy enough to serve as anchors.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge is used when there is only one natural tooth available on one side of the gap to act as an anchor. This is less common and is typically used in areas of the mouth that experience lower biting forces.

Implant-Supported Bridge

Rather than relying on natural teeth as anchors, an implant-supported bridge is held in place by dental implants. This is a strong and stable option,  often recommended when replacing multiple consecutive teeth.

When Is a Crown Recommended?

  • A tooth is cracked, fractured, or weakened and at risk of breaking further
  • A tooth has undergone root canal treatment and needs protection
  • A tooth is heavily decayed and cannot be adequately restored with a filling alone
  • A tooth is severely worn down from grinding or acid erosion
  • An existing crown is old, damaged, or no longer fitting well
  • A tooth requires a significant cosmetic improvement that veneers or bonding cannot address

When Is a Bridge Recommended?

  • One or more teeth have been extracted and need a fixed replacement
  • The teeth adjacent to the gap are healthy and suitable to serve as anchor teeth, or already require crowns
  • A dental implant is not suitable or preferred for the patient’s particular situation
  • A long-term, fixed solution is preferred over a removable denture

What to Expect During Your Crown and Bridge Appointment

The Crown and Bridge Process

During your initial consultation, our dentist can determine whether you need a crown or bridge. Patients can also ask about the materials we have available and any budgetary concerns.

After the crown or bridge is completely installed, a follow-up appointment may be arranged to confirm everything is  comfortable. We are always available if any concerns arise after fitting.

Tooth Preparation

For a crown, the existing tooth is reshaped to create space for the crown to fit properly over it. For a bridge, the teeth on either side are similarly prepared. This is done under local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout.

Impression Taking

Once the teeth are prepared, a precise impression of your mouth is taken. This is sent to our dental lab, where your crown or bridge is custom-made to fit your teeth.

Temporary Crown or Bridge

A temporary restoration is placed over the prepared tooth or teeth while your permanent crown or bridge is being made. This protects the prepared teeth and maintains your appearance in the interim.

Fitting & Cementation

When your permanent restoration is ready, it is tried in to check the fit, bite, and appearance before being permanently cemented in place. Adjustments are made as needed to ensure a comfortable and precise fit.

FAQ on Crowns and Bridges

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question?

Is getting a crown or bridge painful?

The preparation appointment is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. It is normal to experience some sensitivity around the prepared tooth for a few days afterward. This usually settles on its own. If discomfort persists, let us know and we will assess the area.

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, crowns and bridges can last ten years or more. Longevity depends on the material used, the condition of the underlying tooth or supporting teeth, your bite, and how well the restoration is maintained. Habits such as grinding or biting hard objects can shorten their lifespan.

A crown or bridge typically requires two main appointments — one for tooth preparation and impressions, and one for fitting the permanent restoration. In some cases, a third appointment for minor adjustments may be needed. The laboratory fabrication period between visits is usually one to two weeks.

The tooth remains in place beneath the crown. The crown acts as a protective covering, preserving what is left of the natural tooth structure. Regular dental check-ups allow us to monitor the health of the tooth underneath and identify any issues early.

It is uncommon but it can happen, usually due to the cement weakening over time, the tooth underneath decaying, or physical trauma. If your crown becomes loose or comes off, contact us promptly. Do not attempt to reattach it yourself, and avoid chewing on that side until you are seen.

Both are effective, fixed tooth replacement options, and the better choice depends on your individual situation. A bridge can often be completed in a shorter timeframe and at a lower upfront cost. An implant, however, does not require the alteration of adjacent teeth and helps preserve the jawbone. We will discuss both options honestly during your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Old or damaged crowns can be removed and replaced. We will assess the condition of the underlying tooth before proceeding. As long as the tooth root is healthy and sufficient structure remains, a new crown can usually be placed.
