Braces Gigi in Sungai Buloh

Braces

Braces are one of the most effective ways to straighten teeth, correct bite problems, and improve the long-term health and appearance of your smile. By applying gentle, consistent pressure over time, braces gradually move teeth into a better position, for functional and lasting results.

At Klinik Pergigian Polidental, we offer a range of orthodontic options to suit different needs. Whether you are considering braces for yourself or your child, we will assess your situation thoroughly and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Types of Braces

We offer several orthodontic options, each with different characteristics in terms of appearance, comfort, maintenance, and suitability. During your consultation, we will assess your teeth and bite and recommend the option most appropriate for your case.

Conventional Braces

Metal braces are the most widely used type, highly effective across a broad range of cases including complex bite corrections, and are generally the most affordable option. They’re particularly well suited to children and teenagers, and to adults who prioritise effectiveness and value over aesthetics.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces use tooth-coloured or clear ceramic brackets that blend more naturally with the teeth. This makes them significantly less noticeable than metal braces. These brackets are slightly more brittle than metal and require more careful maintenance to avoid staining.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces use a built-in clip mechanism to hold the wire in place, reducing friction between the wire and the bracket, which can result in more comfortable tooth movement and may require fewer adjustment appointments over the course of treatment.

What Is the Right Age to Start Braces?

Children (Ages 7–12)

From around age seven, when the first permanent teeth have begun to erupt, children that show early signs of misaligned teeth can be monitored. While some don’t need to start braces immediately, early treatment can shorten the treatment needed later.

Teenagers (Ages 12–18)

The teenage years are the most common time for braces as most of the permanent teeth have erupted and the jaw is still developing. Fixed braces are effective at this stage and benefit from the naturally faster rate of tooth movement in younger patients.

Adults

There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Adult braces are increasingly common, and the treatment options available make it easier than ever to get a straighter smile without significant disruption to daily life. Treatment may take slightly longer in adults but the results are equally achievable.

What to Expect During Your Braces Appointment

The Dental Braces Process

Once the teeth have reached their planned positions, the braces are removed. This is a straightforward procedure and the teeth are polished afterward. Afterwards, retainers are worn as instructed after treatment to preserve the result achieved.

Consultation

We begin with a thorough examination of your teeth, bite, and jaw, along with X-rays and photographs to give us a complete picture of your orthodontic situation.

Treatment Planning

A treatment plan is prepared, outlining estimated duration of treatment, and any procedures that may be needed beforehand like extractions to create space for the teeth.

Fitting the Braces

Brackets are bonded to the front surface of each tooth and the archwire is placed and secured. The fitting appointment typically takes about one to two hours.

Regular Adjustment

Fixed braces require periodic adjustment appointments, typically every four to eight weeks, where the wire is tightened or replaced to continue guiding the teeth.

FAQ on Dental Braces

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have a question?

How long does braces take?

Treatment duration varies significantly depending on the complexity of the case and the type of braces used. Most patients can expect treatment to last between 18 and 36 months for fixed braces, and 12 to 24 months for clear aligners in suitable cases. A more accurate estimate will be provided during your consultation once your teeth and bite have been assessed.

Braces do not hurt during fitting, but it is normal to experience mild soreness and pressure for a few days after the braces are first placed and after each adjustment appointment. This is a sign that the teeth are responding to the treatment and settles within a few days.

Not always. Whether extractions are needed depends on the degree of crowding and the space available in the jaw. In cases of significant crowding, removing one or more teeth creates the space necessary for the remaining teeth to move into proper alignment. In less severe cases, the arch can sometimes be expanded or teeth repositioned without extractions.

Yes, but we strongly recommend wearing a mouthguard during contact sports to protect both your braces and your teeth from impact. A custom-made mouthguard that fits over your braces provides the best protection. Discuss this with us at your fitting appointment and we can advise on the most suitable option.

It is not uncommon for a bracket to become dislodged, particularly if hard or sticky foods are eaten. If a bracket comes loose, contact us as soon as possible so we can reattach it. A loose bracket means that the tooth is no longer being actively moved, which can slow down treatment progress if left unaddressed for too long.

Common signs that an orthodontic assessment may be needed include crowded or overlapping teeth, teeth that do not come together properly when biting, early or late loss of baby teeth, mouth breathing, thumb sucking habits that have continued beyond early childhood, and jaw shifting or clicking. An assessment does not necessarily mean treatment will begin immediately — it simply gives us the information needed to monitor development and plan appropriately.
